I have recently had a very positive experience with Stress Free Marine the makers of the Stress Free Winch and I thought that I would give them a plug and it might help someone when making the decision on which type of anchor winch to install.
Anyway about 8 months ago I installed a midi sized stress free winch with free fall and it has operated very well except over this time except the last month it had developed a problem with re engaging the drum after free falling to the bottom, it would retrieve but during the process it would disengage drop a bit of rope then re engage.
So on a Friday afternoon I rang stress free to see if they have any ideas what could be cause , they suggest that I take the winch out over the weekend and they will arrange for a courier to pick up the winch on Monday, this was all done and the winch was back in the factory on Tuesday. When removing the winch I noticed the base plate that holds the drum attached to the boat had appeared to be slightly bent and this was confirmed as the problem as it wasn't allowing the spline on the shaft to re engage correctly and I would it would appear that this was caused by yours truly getting the pick stuck on a reef or something similar.
However stress free said they would replace the damaged parts upgrade the winch base plate to a heavier 8mm plate instead of the standard 6mm all under the warranty even though it was probably my own fault and all I would have to pay was the courier cost of $ 100 for the round trip from Brisbane to Adelaide and back.
I was more than happy with this and got my winch back to me fixed within 1 week from start to finish !
They were great to deal with through the whole process and never once asked for a receipt of purchase or anything like that , they were just really helpful.
Anyway if you are looking to install a winch you could do a lot worse than install a stress free winch.
I just thought I would write this, as I spent a long time deliberating over the right winch when I was looking to install mine.
And just in case your wondering I am not related to the company in anyway or anything like that I just thought it would be good karma after receiving the good service from them.
